Hey, I want to try out your shiny new version, so I can enjoy what all great stuff you have done. So I downloaded the 2.8RC version, which seems to be 2.7.8 in disguise.
Apparently the left & right description don't work the way they used to -- did you change the arguments for them? I pressed F1 and looked in the help, but it still says /dl and /dr, and those are what my script uses. They work fine with WinMergeX, and I would have assumed that was just WinMerge code -- but maybe something is out-of-date?
Example invocation:
"WinMerge.exe" /r /ub /dl "LeftDescription" /dr "RightDescription" /ignorews:0 /ignoreeol:1 /ignoreblanklines:1 /showIdentical:0 /showSkipped:0 /f ExcVss /noprefs testfolder1 testfolder2
The tab says "testfolder1\ - testfolder2\", where I assume it was meant to say "LeftDescription" and "RightDescription".

Hm? I use /dl and /dr with TortoiseSVN and they've been working for me. Just checked and got descriptions right for SVN files.
But I haven't used them for folders.

I just tested with folders:
G:\WinMerge>"C:\Program Files\WinMerge\WinMergeU.exe" WinMerge_28Branch WinMerge_SVN -dl "WinMerge 2.8" -dr "WinMerge SVN"
The description was shown in header line, but not in tab text or program caption. So there is something buggy or unexpected. However these descriptions have been a bit fuzzy for folders always and I think never have worked properly. And I know as I implemented them.
We've had this discussion in several bug/patch/rfe items already. E.g. what happens when user browses to subfolder - should we show that same description (and user won't see current folder) or forget the description as it was given for just two original folders...

Clarifying summary.
